Chapter 1 - THE CRY AT THE TABLE

The warm, golden rays of morning sunlight streamed through the tall, street-facing glass windows of a quiet small-town American bakery, illuminating dust motes dancing softly above polished wooden tables. Outside on the main street, parked in a disciplined row along the curb, were six gleaming black heavyweight motorcycles, their chrome pipes catching the bright daylight. Inside the cozy shop, the pleasant aroma of freshly baked bread, roasted coffee beans, and sweet cinnamon rolls filled the air.
Seated around a large, heavy oak table near the window was Mason Cole, surrounded by five of his closest motorcycle club brothers. At thirty-eight years old, Mason was a towering, heavily muscular force—a man whose physical presence alone dominated any room he entered. He possessed sharp, masculine features, dark wavy hair, and a strong, sculpted jawline. Intricate dark ink covered his broad chest, his thick neck, and wrapped continuously down both of his massive arms in intricate tattoo sleeves.
Because he was relaxing with his brothers during a casual morning fuel and coffee stop, Mason wore an open black leather motorcycle vest with no shirt underneath, dark fitted jeans, heavy black riding boots, silver rings on his thick knuckles, and a steel chain bracelet around his left wrist. Stitched neatly over the left breast pocket of his vest was a distinct, small silver bear patch—the crest of his private lineage and personal emblem.
Mason held a thick ceramic coffee mug in his hand, chuckling softly at a joke made by one of his brothers.
Suddenly, a tiny, trembling hand reached out and tugged lightly at the lower hem of his black leather vest.
Mason stopped mid-sentence. His dark eyes flickered down. He set his ceramic coffee mug onto the wooden table with a quiet, deliberate click and turned his broad frame around in his chair.
Standing beside his boot was Emma. Seven years old, small, and fragile, Emma was a little girl with tangled light-brown hair framing a pale, tear-streaked face. Her eyes were wide with a profound, terrifying fear. She wore a simple, slightly dirty pale floral dress, a knit cardigan, and worn sneakers. Clutched tightly in her small, trembling right fist were three crumpled one-dollar bills and a handful of loose silver coins.
"Please don’t let him take me," Emma whimpered, her small voice shaking violently as fresh tears welled in her eyes and spilled down her cheeks.
Mason didn't hesitate for a single second. The cold, unyielding exterior of a feared motorcycle club leader vanished instantly. He slid smoothly off his chair, dropping down onto one knee so his massive, tattooed frame was perfectly level with her height.

"What’s your name, sweetheart?" Mason asked softly, his deep voice dropping into a gentle, soothing tone.
Emma wiped her nose with the sleeve of her cardigan, her tiny body trembling. "Emma," she whispered.
