Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW OF MARCUS DOLE

An hour later, the sun sat high over the annex, baking the asphalt pathways between the kennel rows.
Evelyn stepped out of Enclosure Four, locking the gate behind her. The three Malinois remained near the fence line, their eyes following her every step, quiet and watchful rather than volatile.
Staff Sergeant Petrov met her at the wash station, holding out a cold bottle of water.
"I've never seen Thor touch another human being since the Medevac flight brought Marcus back," Petrov said quietly, his voice filled with genuine reverence as he watched the three dogs inside. "When we brought them back to the states, they tried to tear the transport crates apart. The base vet wanted to put them down three weeks ago."
Evelyn took the water, taking a long drink before wiping her brow with the back of her forearm. "A military working dog doesn't view a mission as a set of objectives, Petrov. They view it as a shared space with their handler. When Marcus died, their world didn't change—it collapsed."
"And you?" Petrov asked, looking closely at her tired face, at the faint silver scars along her neck. "How do you know that specific kind of silence?"
Evelyn paused, looking past the chain-link fences toward the hazy outlines of the San Jacinto mountains.
"Two years ago in the Helmand Province," Evelyn said softly, her voice dropping into a quiet register. "My team took a direct hit from an IED. I was the only one who walked out of that valley on my own two feet. I spent six months sitting in a room just like that enclosure, waiting for someone to stop telling me I needed to get back to work."

Petrov nodded slowly, understanding completely. "You don't talk to them like an instructor."
"No," Evelyn replied, turning back toward the cage. "I talk to them like a survivor."
