Chapter 2 - THE THRESHOLD OF NO RETURN

The metallic clack of the gate latch resonated across the quiet gravel yard like a rifle shot.
Inside the enclosure, the three Belgian Malinois responded with instant, distinct tactical postures.
Ares—the largest of the three, a fifty-pound specimen with a coal-black muzzle, razor-sharp ears, and a broad chest—immediately cut across the gravel. His movement was fluid, lethal, and calculating. He didn't bark. He didn't growl. He simply began a tight, relentless patrol pattern, his dark eyes fixated on Evelyn’s neck and waist, analyzing her balance, her leverage, and her center of gravity.
Ten feet behind him, Zeus held his ground near the concrete wash rack. His ears were pinned slightly back, his tail tucked low, his muscles trembling beneath a slick mahogany coat. Zeus was not looking for a fight; he was trapped in a state of hyper-vigilant terror, his instincts telling him that any human near this gate meant pain, change, or abandonment.
And in the absolute center of the dusty enclosure lay Thor.
Thor was completely motionless. His head rested flat against his broad front paws, his eyes glazed with an unreadable, hollow quiet. Where Ares showed aggression and Zeus showed fear, Thor showed nothing—a profound, devastating grief that had shut down his vital drive entirely.
Behind the thick observation glass, Colonel Hargrove leaned toward the microphone, his polished brass buttons catching the fluorescent light of the control room.
"No vest. No handler. No intervention," Hargrove commanded into the comms line, his voice flat, emotionless, and absolute.
Sergeant Petrov shifted uncomfortably beside the control desk, his hands hovering nervously near the hydraulic emergency release levers. "Colonel... if Ares commits, she won't have time to draw her weapon. That dog snaps wrists in a fraction of a second."
"Captain Mercer claimed she could evaluate these assets without lethal suppression," Hargrove replied, his eyes fixed on Evelyn's back. "If she fails, we sign the destruction order today. I am not risking another handler's life on broken equipment."

Outside, Evelyn took one step across the steel threshold.
She didn't reach for her sidearm. She didn't look at Ares. She reached behind her, grabbed the heavy chain-link gate, pulled it shut until the latch clicked into place, and locked herself inside the cage with three lethal predators.
