Chapter 7 - THE ARCHITECTURE OF A RECOVERY

The immediate aftermath inside the observation deck was marked by an uncomfortable, stunned silence.
Colonel Hargrove’s hand remained suspended mid-air above the intercom system. Sergeant Petrov slowly released his grip on the red emergency lever, his breath coming out in a long, shaky exhale that rattled his chest.
"Sergeant," Hargrove spoke, his voice clipped, searching for his lost composure. "Report status."
Petrov leaned over the live monitor feed, his eyes wide as he read the biometric telemetry coming off Thor’s tactical harness. "Heart rate... dropping, sir. Cortisol spikes are flattening across all three assets. Ares has disengaged from patrol. Zeus is... Zeus is sitting three feet from her left arm."
Outside, Evelyn had not moved her physical position, but the entire dynamic of Enclosure Four had been rewritten.
Thor had rested his heavy, dust-covered head directly on her right shoulder, pressing his weight against her collarbone in a deep, instinctual gesture of deep-pressure seeking—a behavior reserved exclusively for a bonded handler. Evelyn raised her right hand slowly, avoiding any sudden vertical movement, and rest her palm against the side of Thor’s neck, her fingers sinking into his thick, double-layer coat.
Ares sat to her right, his dark head turned outward toward the observation deck, assuming a quiet, defensive perimeter guard. Zeus had crept closer, his chest resting against her boots, his body trembling far less than it had ten minutes ago.
Evelyn looked up at the black dome of the security camera mounted above the gate.

"Colonel Hargrove," her voice echoed through the control room speaker, steady and clear. "These assets do not require lethal authorization or behavioral suppression. They require operational continuity. They need a handler who understands how to carry what was left behind."
Hargrove stared at the screen. For the first time in his thirty-year military career, the rigid officer found himself completely devoid of a counter-argument.
