Chapter 6 - THE APPROACH OF THE SILENT ONE

The entire K9 facility seemed to fall into an absolute, breathless freeze.

The distant hum of aircraft engines faded into background noise. The observers behind the reinforced glass stood glued to their positions, their chatter dying instantly.

Thor began to walk.

He didn't run. He didn't trot. He took slow, heavy, deliberate steps across the sun-baked gravel, his eyes locked entirely on Evelyn Mercer.

In the observation deck, three officers instinctively took a step back from the glass. Petrov’s right hand clamped around the red hydraulic override button, his knuckles turning stark white beneath his weathered skin.

"Captain, stand up," Hargrove ordered over the comms, his voice losing its cold composure for the very first time. "Draw your sidearm. That asset is uncontrolled."

Evelyn didn't reach for her hip. She didn't move an inch. She remained seated in the dirt, her body an open, defenseless landing pad for seventy pounds of apex predator.

Thor came closer.

Five feet. Three feet. Two feet.

He stopped only inches from her face.

The dog was so close that Evelyn could feel the warm, dry air from his nostrils against her skin. She could see the faint gray hairs starting to show around his dark muzzle, the dust caked into his tactical harness, and the deep, profound weariness reflecting in his dark brown eyes.

Evelyn looked directly into his eyes, her expression softening into an undeniable bond of shared loss.

She leaned in slightly, her voice a feather-light whisper meant only for him:

"I know."

May you like

Thor made one small, decisive movement toward her shoulder—

And the morning sun flared white across the observation glass, sealing the story in silence before anyone could see what happened next.
