Chapter 4 - TIME IN THE GRAVEL

Minutes stretched like thick amber under the relentless morning sun.

The temperature inside the open enclosure rose steadily. The dry breeze swept down from the San Jacinto peaks, rustling the dry scrub brush along the perimeter fence and carrying the distant hum of a helicopter rotor miles away.

Inside the observation room, the initial tension began to turn into a strange, heavy quiet.

Ares completed his eighth circuit around Evelyn. But with each pass, the tight, explosive tension in his spine began to ease. His pacing slowed from a tactical stalk to a heavy, rhythmic trot. Finally, he stopped directly to her left, dropped his hindquarters into the gravel, and let his tongue hang out, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter fence rather than her throat.

Beside the concrete rack, Zeus cautiously took one step forward. His nose stretched high into the air, catching the subtle shifts in the wind. He took another step. Then another. He didn't approach Evelyn directly, but the posture of defensive terror had melted into tentative, cautious curiosity.

Then, Thor raised his head.

It was the first voluntary movement the dog had made in over three hours. His deep, dark eyes unlocked from the dusty ground and focused squarely on the blonde woman sitting quietly in the center of the yard.

Evelyn did not make a sudden move toward any of them. She kept her hands open, her eyes soft, her posture completely relaxed against the harsh steel fencing.

She opened her mouth, her voice barely louder than the dry mountain breeze, carrying a quiet, resonant truth that vibrated through the quiet yard:

May you like

"I'm not replacing him."

Across the enclosure, Thor’s ears lifted instantly.
