Chapter 5 - THE SEED OF A SECRET

Jack turned the heavy rifle over in his trembling hands, his thumbs running along the smooth, worn wood near the receiver.
He leaned close, his weathered face inches from the walnut stock, studying the microscopic striations and the silver-burned inlay hidden beneath twenty years of oil and handling. His chest heaved as he took short, shallow breaths, his eyes darting frantically across every inch of the receiver.
The audience of elite operators—men who had seen Jack Reeves remain stone-faced through mortar barrages and intense tactical crises—stared in complete, stunned silence.
"Master Chief?" the young SEAL Instructor asked nervously, taking a step forward. "Is there a squib? Is the chamber unsafe?"
Jack didn't answer him. He didn't even acknowledge the instructor was in the room.
Grace smoothly pushed herself up from the concrete shooting pad, dusting the gray gravel from the knees of her Marine uniform. She stood before the Master Chief, her eyes fixed on his pale, shocked face.
"What is it, Master Chief?" Grace asked, her voice level, firm, but laced with an underlying, rising curiosity. "Is there something wrong with the weapon?"
Jack slowly lowered the rifle, holding it horizontally between his broad, shaking hands. He looked up from the walnut stock, his gray eyes locking onto Grace's face with an intensity that sent a cold shiver down her spine.
The sun beat down relentlessly on the corrugated roof, but the air around Lane 4 felt suddenly ice-cold.
"That rifle was supposed to be destroyed twenty years ago," Jack said, his voice dropping into a hollow, haunting rasp that barely carried over the wind.
Every single operator standing behind the firing line went dead quiet. Not a shoe shifted; not a gear strap rustled.
Grace stared at him, her heart beating a fast, heavy rhythm against her ribs.
"Why?" Grace asked softly. "Why was it supposed to be destroyed?"

Jack did not answer her question.
Instead, he slowly lowered his gaze back to the vintage rifle in his hands, his thumbs tracing the faint silver mark on the stock once more. Then, he raised his head and looked at Grace—not as a Marine officer visiting his range, but as if her father had just pulled her into the center of a deep, dark secret she was never meant to discover.
