Chapter 12 - THE VOICE FROM THE PAST

"If this recording is playing," Colonel Thornton’s voice rasped through the speakers, preserved in crisp digital clarity, "it means two things. First, it means Master Chief Jack Reeves has maintained his post and fulfilled his oath to guard the weapon. Second, it means my daughter, Grace, has taken her rightful place in this fight."
Grace gripped the edge of the stainless steel workbench, her knuckles turning white. Hearing her father’s voice after eight years of absolute silence sent a surge of warmth and grief crashing through her chest.
"Grace," the recording continued, the sound of wind and distant rotor blades faintly audible in the background of the decades-old audio file, "what they told you about my heart attack in Ramadi was a lie designed to protect you from the men who hunted my unit. I didn't die of natural causes, and I didn't abandon my command. I went dark because I discovered that the weapons systems being deployed to our forward bases were being deliberately compromised by a defense contractor operating under the code name Prometheus."
Jack leaned forward, his eyes narrowing as he read the corresponding text documents scrolling automatically beside the audio track.
"Prometheus," Jack muttered under his breath. "That was the shadow holding company that secured the multi-billion-dollar logistics contract for the Pacific theater back in two-thousand-three."
"Prometheus didn't just supply faulty equipment," Colonel Thornton’s voice explained, every word measured and icy cold. "They created a back-door surveillance network embedded inside the microchips of every tactical rifle, satellite link, and armored vehicle produced for the Armed Forces. They were selling real-time tracking data to foreign syndicates while collecting kickbacks from black-budget committees in Washington."
The recording paused for two seconds, replaced by the sound of heavy paper turning.
"Jack Reeves and I spent three months gathering the encrypted drive chips containing the source code for Prometheus. We realized that if we handed this evidence to standard military tribunals, the corrupt officials inside the procurement chain would destroy the files and execute everyone involved. So, we split the key."
Grace turned her head to look at Jack, realization dawning in her sharp blue eyes. "The vintage rifle..."
"The rifle was the physical key," Jack confirmed, his voice thick with emotion. "The firing pin and the receiver stock were hand-machined by your father using specialized non-magnetic alloys. The hollow cavity inside the stock held the index drive you just opened, but the primary decryption key—the piece that unlocks the entire Prometheus archive—was hidden somewhere else."

"Grace," her father’s voice resonated one final time, softening slightly into the tone of a protective parent. "The rifle kept you safe because Prometheus believed the data was destroyed when my helicopter went down in Iraq. But now that the drive is active, their automated network will detect the decryption ping. You have less than twelve hours before Prometheus asset teams lock down this base. Go to the coordinates listed in section four. Trust Jack. He is the only brother-in-arms I ever trusted with my life. Semper Fi, my sweet girl."
The audio file clicked off, leaving behind a sharp, buzzing hiss of white noise.
