Chapter 4 - THE RECOGNITION

Grace slid a single match-grade cartridge into the open breech, her fingers operating the heavy steel bolt with smooth, mechanical perfection.

CLACK-THUMP.

The action closed, locking the live round into the chamber.

As she lowered her head to finalize her sight picture, the bright California sunlight shifted slightly, shining directly down through a gap in the corrugated roof. The intense ray of light illuminated the dark receiver of the vintage rifle, highlighting the grain of the dark walnut stock near the wrist of the grip.

Jack stepped closer, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the wood.

His gaze locked onto a small, faint section of the stock just behind the bolt handle—a section where the wood grain was slightly darker, bearing a series of deep, microscopic striations and a faint, silver-colored inlay burnished deep into the grain.

Jack’s face lost all color. The blood drained from his cheeks so fast that the surrounding operators noticed instantly.

His eyes widened in sheer disbelief, his pupils dilating as he stared at the specific marking on the walnut stock. It wasn't a standard military arsenal mark, nor was it a commercial manufacturer's stamp. It was a precise, hand-etched modification—a ghost from a past he had spent twenty years trying to forget.

"DON'T FIRE!" Jack roared.

The command shattered the quiet afternoon like a thunderclap.

The entire range froze instantly. Two operators near the ammunition bench startled, dropping a plastic box of brass onto the concrete with a loud rattle. The SEAL Instructor stepped back, his eyes wide in absolute shock.

Grace’s finger immediately withdrew further from the trigger guard. She did not panic, but her body remained rigid as she slowly lifted her head from the stock, turning her brow up toward the Master Chief.

Before she could speak, Jack stepped forward, lunged down, and carefully took the rifle directly out of her hands.

His hands—hands that had held automatic weapons in heavy combat without ever trembling—were visibly shaking as he lifted the heavy vintage rifle toward the sunlight.
