Chapter 10 - INTO THE VAULT

The heavy, reinforced steel door of the NSW underground armory vault clicked shut with a massive, pneumatic thud that echoed through the concrete hallway.
Inside, the room was cool, quiet, and completely isolated from the outside world. Fluorescent light strips hummed softly overhead, casting a bright, clinical illumination across stainless steel workbenches, rows of secure weapon racks, and high-density electronic diagnostic gear.
Jack laid the canvas rifle case flat across the central workbench.
Grace stood beside him, her hands resting flat against the steel surface as Jack unzipped the case and pulled the vintage rifle out once more.
With practiced speed, Jack removed the buttplate screws, withdrew the vacuum-sealed plastic packet from the hollow stock, and laid it directly beneath the bright fluorescent light.
He pulled a pair of sterile nitrile gloves from a dispenser on the wall, slipping them over his large hands before using a small razor blade to carefully slice open the top edge of the plastic seal.
He pulled out the folded piece of thick, waterproof military paper.
The paper was covered in precise, hand-written coordinates, tactical call signs, and a series of official clearance codes bearing the seal of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 2004. At the bottom of the page, written in bold, dark black ink, was her father's unmistakable signature: Colonel James Thornton, USMC.
Beside the signature was a single line of handwritten text addressed directly to Grace:
"If you are reading this, Grace, Jack Reeves has found you. Trust him. The rifle was never meant to shoot targets. It was meant to keep the peace."
Grace’s breath hitched in her throat as her eyes scanned her father's handwriting. Tears welled at the corners of her eyes, but she forced them back, her discipline holding firm.
Jack reached into the plastic packet and picked up the small, anti-static flash drive.
He looked at Grace, his weathered face filled with a profound, quiet weight.
"Whatever is on this drive, Grace," Jack whispered softly, "will change everything you thought you knew about your father's legacy. Are you sure you want to see it?"
Grace looked at the vintage walnut rifle resting on the stainless steel table, then reached out and placed her hand flat over her father's signature on the paper.

"Plug it in, Master Chief," Grace said calmly, her voice echoing with absolute, unshakable conviction. "My father brought me here for a reason. Let's finish what he started."
Jack nodded slowly, picked up the flash drive, and walked toward the secure terminal at the back of the vault, as the quiet mystery of Colonel James Thornton finally began to unravel in the bright, silent light of the underground room.
