Chapter 11 - THE DIGITAL DECRYPTION

The secure terminal at the rear of the underground armory vault hummed to life as Jack inserted the small, anti-static flash drive into an isolated, air-gapped port. The monitor flickered, casting a cool blue glow across his weathered features and Grace’s pale, resolute face.

Lines of green diagnostic code cascaded rapidly down the screen. The terminal's hardware security module instantly detected the legacy military encryption protocol embedded within the drive's master boot record.

"It’s using an old 256-bit asymmetric cipher from the early two-thousands," Jack muttered, his calloused fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced familiarity. "Standard naval intelligence architecture, but modified with a secondary biometric hash."

Grace leaned closer to the terminal, her shoulder brushing against Jack’s heavy tactical jacket. "A biometric hash? Tied to what?"

"Tied to your father," Jack answered softly, stepping back from the console to reveal a square prompt flashing in the center of the monitor: INSERT SPECIFIED DNA OR RETINAL PROFILE TO DECRYPT INDEX FILE.

Grace stared at the blinking prompt. Her mind raced back through the memories of her father, Colonel James Thornton—a man who had spent thirty years serving in the shadows of the United States Marine Corps, leaving behind a legacy shrouding classified missions and silent sacrifices.

"He didn't have access to modern retinal scanners in two-thousand-four," Grace said, her voice steady and analytical despite the emotional weight pressing against her chest. "Look at the prompt parameters, Jack. It’s asking for a legacy bloodline sequence."

She reached for the sterile razor blade Jack had used to slice open the vacuum-sealed packet. Before Jack could object, Grace made a tiny, precise nick on the pad of her right index finger. A single drop of crimson blood pooled against her skin.

She pressed her thumb against the optical scanner embedded below the terminal's keyboard.

The machine hummed softly. A red laser light swept across her finger, reading the microscopic biological markers within the blood sample.

For three agonizing seconds, the underground vault fell into complete, unbroken silence.

BIOMETRIC SEQUENCE CONFIRMED: THORNTON, G. - DIRECT LINEAGE DETECTED.

A sharp electronic chime echoed off the concrete walls. The screen cleared, revealing a high-density directory containing hundreds of digitized operational logs, tactical maps, satellite images, and audio recordings spanning three decades of covert military history.

At the very top of the directory sat a single folder highlighted in high-visibility red text: PROJECT ARCHANGEL: OCTOBER 2004 - FINAL REPORT.

Grace took a deep, shuddering breath, her fingers trembling slightly as she reached out to select the file. "Project Archangel... he mentioned it once in a letter he wrote from Okinawa, but the entire page was redacted by the Defense Intelligence Agency."

"It wasn't just redacted, Grace," Jack whispered, his jaw setting in a hard, grim line as he read the classified header on the screen. "It was buried. Archangel wasn't a standard combat deployment. It was the joint task force that uncovered the shadow network operating inside the Pentagon's procurement division."

Jack clicked the primary file. The terminal’s audio speakers crackled with static before a rich, deep baritone voice echoed through the cold air of the vault—the unmistakable, living voice of Colonel James Thornton.
