Chapter 7 - The Empire Hears Its Own Voice

Maya did not reveal private medical details.

She did not need to.

Ruth stepped forward and addressed the private security lead, the officiant, and the Ashford family attorney, who had already moved toward the aisle with a frozen expression.

“These materials have been transmitted to counsel and the Hartwell trust protector,” Ruth said. “They include original metadata, internal legal drafts, approval records, and evidence of fabricated reports used to coerce Ms. Ellison.”

Preston stood slowly.

“This is a stunt.”

Jonah’s voice cut through the garden.

“No. This is discovery.”

Several guests recognized him. The forgotten Hartwell brother. The dangerous one. The unstable one. Except he stood there composed, holding himself with the quiet authority of a man who had waited too long to waste the moment.

Celeste turned on Preston.

“What is she talking about?”

Preston looked at her father instead. That was his mistake.

Celeste saw it.

So did everyone else.

Maya took one document from the folder, folded so no private information showed, and handed it to the Ashford attorney. The man read only the top portion before his expression changed.

Celeste’s father reached for it.

The attorney did not hand it over immediately.

That hesitation did more damage than any shout could have.

Preston said, “Maya is desperate. She broke into my systems.”

“No,” Maya said. “You broke into my life.”

Her voice did not tremble.

“You sent a lawyer with a fake police report. You leaked lies about me to the press. You ransacked my apartment. You tried to make the world believe I was dangerous so no one would believe what you did.”

The guests were silent now.

Not entertained.

Listening.

Maya looked at Celeste.

“And you watched from behind the glass.”

Celeste’s face lost color.

“She knew?” her father asked.

Celeste said nothing.

That silence became her confession.

Preston tried to step toward Maya, but security moved into his path—not touching him, simply making the boundary visible.

The man who had threatened to bury her in prison could no longer cross ten feet of red carpet.
