Chapter 5 - The Wedding Invitation

Three weeks later, an invitation arrived at Maya’s old apartment.
Cream cardstock. Gold edges. Celeste Ashford and Preston Hartwell. A luxury outdoor ceremony at the Ashford family estate in the Hudson Valley.
Maya laughed when Jonah handed it to her.
Not because it was funny.
Because Preston had sent it as cruelty.
A reminder that while she hid from headlines, he would stand beneath white flowers beside an heiress and smile for every camera that had called Maya a criminal.
“He wants you to see it,” Jonah said.
Maya turned the invitation over in her hands.
“Then I should.”
Ruth did not like the idea at first. “A public confrontation can be risky.”
Maya looked at the evidence folder on the table. “He used public shame as a weapon. I want witnesses when it breaks.”
Jonah watched her carefully. “This is not about revenge.”
“No,” Maya said. “It’s about making sure they can’t say I came quietly with a private demand.”
That was the danger. Preston’s machine worked best in sealed rooms. NDAs. Quiet settlements. Whisper campaigns. Private threats dressed as legal options. If Maya stayed hidden, he would keep defining her.
So they planned.
Ruth arranged for copies of the original files to be delivered to counsel, the board trustee, and two investigative reporters at the same time. Jonah contacted the trust protector overseeing the Hartwell family voting shares. Maya prepared a statement short enough to survive panic and clear enough to cut through noise.
She also scheduled a prenatal checkup the morning of the wedding.
The baby’s heartbeat filled the small exam room, fast and strong.
Maya cried then.
The doctor handed her a printed ultrasound image.
“Everything looks steady,” she said.
Maya held the photo gently.
For months, Preston had treated her pregnancy as leverage. A complication. A problem to erase or control.
Standing in that doctor’s office, Maya decided the baby would not enter the world inside Preston’s lie.
So she placed the ultrasound photo inside her folder and drove with Jonah toward the Ashford estate.
