Chapter 1 - The Check on the Table

At four months pregnant, Maya Ellison learned her engagement was over in a glass-walled boardroom thirty-six floors above Manhattan.

She had arrived at Hartwell Innovations expecting lunch with Preston Hartwell, her billionaire fiancé, before an appointment to look at cribs in SoHo. She wore a pale blue maternity dress under a wool coat, one hand resting protectively over the small curve of her stomach. Their baby had started fluttering that week, tiny movements that made everything frightening and beautiful at the same time.

Preston was not in the room.

His corporate attorney was.

Elliot Vance sat at the far side of the conference table with a cashier’s check, a thick nondisclosure agreement, and a folder arranged neatly in front of him. He did not stand when Maya entered.

“Ms. Ellison,” he said. “Please sit.”

Maya looked around. “Where is Preston?”

“Mr. Hartwell felt it would be cleaner if I handled the transition.”

The word transition made her skin go cold.

Elliot slid the check toward her.

Fifty thousand dollars.

Then the agreement.

Then the folder.

“What is this?” Maya whispered.

“An opportunity,” he said. “You take the money, leave New York quietly, and waive any future claims involving Mr. Hartwell, Hartwell Innovations, and the child.”

Maya stared at him.

“The child?”

His expression did not change. “If you create public difficulty, we will submit the attached documentation to law enforcement and relevant agencies.”

She opened the folder.

Fake bank statements. Fabricated transfers tied to the private academy where she worked as an administrator. A forged police report claiming narcotics had been found inside her classroom desk. Photographs staged so poorly they might have been laughable if they were not built to ruin her life.

“You’re framing me.”

Elliot tapped his gold pen once against the table.

“We are giving you a chance to avoid a very public misunderstanding.”

Through the narrow clear strip in the frosted glass wall, Maya saw Celeste Ashford standing in the hallway. Blonde. Elegant. Heiress to an old shipping fortune. Preston’s “strategic partner,” according to magazines.

Celeste smiled.

She was watching Maya’s destruction in real time.

Maya looked back at Elliot.

“Tell Preston I said no.”

For the first time, the attorney’s expression flickered.

Maya stood, left the check on the table, and walked out with the folder’s threat burning behind her.

She thought leaving the boardroom meant she had escaped.

She was wrong.
