Chapter 3 - The Brother They Buried Alive

Maya had met Jonah Hartwell only once.

It was at a shareholder dinner eight months earlier. He stood in the back of the room in a dark suit, silver streaks at his temples, broad shoulders still carrying something military despite the expensive fabric. Preston introduced him as “my brother Jonah, retired from the company.”

Jonah smiled politely, but his eyes missed nothing.

Later, Preston told Maya not to speak with him.

“He’s unstable,” he said. “He tried to take control after our father died. We had to push him out.”

Maya believed him then because love makes some warnings sound like protection.

Now she moved through her ruined apartment with the phone pressed to her ear, grabbing medication, identification, prenatal records, a sweater, the small ultrasound photo from her refrigerator, and the fake legal folder Elliot had not expected her to copy before walking out.

“How do I know this isn’t Preston?” she asked.

“Because if Preston wanted you, he would have sent cameras to the front door and police to the back.” Jonah’s voice stayed calm. “The alley is clear for three more minutes.”

Maya looked toward the fire escape.

“What do you want?”

“To keep you alive long enough to testify.”

That word stopped her.

Testify.

Against whom?

She climbed down the fire escape with shaking legs, one hand protectively under her stomach. Jonah’s black SUV waited in the alley with tinted windows and no headlights. He stepped out just long enough to take her bag, then opened the rear door.

Maya hesitated.

Jonah looked at her stomach, then back at her face.

“I will not touch you unless you ask for help.”

That was the first sentence anyone had said to her all day that did not sound like ownership.

She got in.

Jonah drove without speaking until they were across the bridge and away from the photographers. Only then did he hand her a sealed envelope from the console.

“My father did not leave Preston the company free and clear,” he said. “He left him conditional control. If Preston uses Hartwell assets for fraud, coercion, or criminal exposure, the trust can remove him.”

Maya opened the envelope.

Inside were old board resolutions, trust clauses, and a list of names.

Elliot Vance.

Celeste Ashford.

Preston Hartwell.

“I’ve been building a case for eleven months,” Jonah said. “You are not his first target.”

May you like

Maya looked up.

“No,” Jonah said quietly. “But you may be the one he made the mistake of underestimating.”
