Chapter 6 - The Aisle Turns Silent

The Ashford estate looked like money pretending to be tradition.

White floral arches lined the red carpet aisle. Gold chairs faced a garden altar beneath bright polished daylight. Waiters moved silently behind hedges. Security stood near the aisle in dark formal uniforms, watching faces more than flowers.

Celeste stood beneath the arch in a white lace gown, veil floating behind her. She looked perfect in the way old money teaches women to look perfect before destroying someone politely.

Preston wore a black tuxedo and the relaxed smile of a man who believed every threat had been contained.

Then Maya stepped onto the aisle.

The first gasp came from a woman in the third row.

Then another.

Then silence moved outward through the guests.

Maya wore a fitted satin light-blue maternity gown. Her long blonde hair was smooth over her shoulders. One hand rested on her stomach; the other lifted the ultrasound photo just high enough for the front rows to understand what it was without reading anything.

Preston’s face collapsed.

Celeste’s smile vanished.

Maya’s voice was calm.

“You forgot one witness.”

Preston stepped off the altar. “Maya.”

She kept walking.

Security moved slightly, but Jonah appeared at the side entrance with Ruth and two attorneys behind him. No one rushed. No one shouted. That made it worse for Preston because the scene did not look unstable. It looked prepared.

Preston dropped to one knee in the aisle.

Not romantic.

Pleading.

“Please don’t do this here.”

Celeste jerked away from him, rage flashing across her face. “She’s lying.”

Maya lowered the ultrasound photo and revealed the legal folder under her arm.

“Then why did your lawyer pay me to disappear?”

Whispers exploded across the rows.

Celeste’s father, a gray-haired man in a pale pink formal suit, stopped trying to pull his daughter back and looked sharply at Preston.

Maya opened the folder just enough for the documents to remain unreadable from a distance.

“I brought the original.”

Preston’s eyes went to the folder.

May you like

Then to Jonah.

And for the first time, Celeste saw fear on the face of the man she was about to marry.
