Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of Vanessa Cole

The silence surrounding Booth 17 was deafening, suffocating every sense of pride Vanessa had built over her ten-year career as general manager. The Piano music in the background seemed to fade into irrelevance as the harsh reality set in.
The Corporate Representative stepped closer to the table, her voice clear, cold, and echoing across the quiet corner of the dining room.
"Vanessa Cole," the woman stated, her tone devoid of emotion. "As of 8:14 PM tonight, your executive authority over L'Auberge Dorée is suspended, pending an immediate forensic audit of all operational standards, staff conduct, and guest relations."
Vanessa felt as if the floor beneath her heels had dissolved. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out for several terrifying seconds.
"This... this must be a misunderstanding!" Vanessa gasped softly, her eyes pleading with the Corporate Representative. "I was only enforcing our restaurant's dress code policy! This man... he came in here wearing work boots and dirt-covered clothes! I have a duty to preserve our brand!"
The Corporate Representative didn't even flinch. She slowly turned her head, looking at Vanessa with a gaze of utter pity and cold disdain.
"The man sitting in this booth," the Representative replied smoothly, "is Daniel Mercer. He is the Chief Global Asset Director and Majority Stakeholder of the Apex Hospitality Group—the parent entity that owns this building, this land, and the very brand you claim to protect."

A collective gasp echoed from a nearby table where a wealthy couple had been watching the scene unfold.
Vanessa’s eyes widened to their absolute limit. Her breath hitched painfully in her chest as her mind reeled. She stared down at Daniel—the man she had called an eyesore, the man she had threatened to throw out into the street—realizing that he held her entire life, career, and future in his hands.
