Chapter 4 - A Quiet Command in the Shadows

Vanessa took Daniel’s silence as a sign of submission. She raised her chin, her smile turning into a triumphant, mocking grin as she gestured toward the two security guards who were now standing less than two feet from the booth.

"I suggest you settle your tab and leave quietly through the side exit," Vanessa added, her voice smooth and venomous. "For the child’s sake, don't make this difficult."

Daniel remained perfectly motionless. Slowly, without breaking eye contact with Vanessa, he reached his right hand down into the deep pocket of his work jacket beneath the wooden edge of the table.

He pulled out a sleek, unbranded dark smartphone.

With practiced, swift movements of his thumb, Daniel bypassed the standard lock screen and opened a secure, encrypted corporate interface—a high-level portal displaying real-time financial, operational, and auditing data across a massive hospitality conglomerate.

His thumb tapped rapidly against the screen, typing a brief, five-word message into an encrypted direct-messaging channel.

The audience, positioned behind Daniel's shoulder, never got to see the text on the screen or the identity of the recipient. The screen flickered off a fraction of a second later as Daniel calmly slid the device back into his jacket pocket.

Vanessa watched him put the phone away. In her arrogant mind, she assumed he was merely checking the time or texting a ride because he had surrendered to her authority.

Her condescending smile widened.

"Good," Vanessa sneered softly, smoothing the front of her navy blazer. "I’m glad we understand each other."
