Chapter 2 - The Mask of Superiority

Vanessa smoothed her navy lapels, her icy blue eyes narrowing as she glared across the carpeted floor directly at Booth 17.

She tapped a finger on her digital clipboard, her mouth curling into a cold, dismissive sneer. To her, the sight of worn work boots resting on the custom wool carpet near Booth 17 was an absolute insult to the establishment's prestige. She ignored the fact that Daniel had made a reservation, paid in full for their appetizer, and was currently waiting politely for their main course.

She motioned discreetly to two tall, burly security officers standing near the entrance—men in crisp black blazers wearing ear-comm pieces. With a sharp flick of her wrist, she signaled them to follow her across the main floor.

Vanessa strode toward Booth 17, her high heels clicking loudly against the hardwood border of the carpet. Her arrival was deliberate, loud, and designed to draw the attention of surrounding tables.

She stopped right beside Daniel’s booth, hovering over the father and daughter like a storm cloud. Without a word of greeting, Vanessa raised her manicured hand and pointed her finger directly at Daniel’s chest, right in front of little Sophie.

Across the dining room, the two security employees moved into position, closing in on the table from opposite angles, their posture rigid and confrontational.

Vanessa looked down her nose at Daniel, her voice sharp, condescending, and loud enough for three nearby tables to hear clearly:

“Sir, this section is for premium guests.”

Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't jump or show a hint of panic. He slowly turned his head and looked around the dining room. Just two tables away, several pristine, upscale booths stood completely empty, their white tablecloths untouched, their polished wine glasses sparkling under the ambient lighting. The restaurant was barely half full.

At the sound of Vanessa’s harsh tone, eight-year-old Sophie’s hand froze mid-stroke. The blue crayon hovered over the paper menu. Her little heart raced as she looked at the cold, blonde woman pointing at her father, then at the two tall security guards standing behind her.
