Chapter 3 - The Innocence and the Coldness

Daniel calmly picked up his silver fork and knife, continuing to slice a portion of roasted chicken on Sophie’s porcelain plate into neat, bite-sized pieces, as if the manager’s presence were nothing more than a passing breeze.

Sophie looked up at Vanessa’s stern, arrogant face, her lower lip beginning to tremble slightly. She reached out with her small hand and tugged gently on the sleeve of Daniel’s dark work jacket.

"Daddy..." Sophie whispered softly, her eyes wide with worry and confusion. "...did we do something wrong?"

Daniel stopped cutting the chicken. The slight clinking of his knife against the porcelain ceased.

He slowly laid his cutlery down on the side of the plate, turning his attention entirely to his daughter. He reached over, taking her small, trembling hand in his own warm grip, his eyes softening with deep paternal tenderness.

"No, sweetheart," Daniel said softly, his voice calm, steady, and soothing. "We didn't do anything wrong. Eat your dinner, okay?"

Daniel turned his head back toward Vanessa Cole. As his eyes met the manager's, the warmth in his expression vanished completely, replaced by a gaze as sharp and cold as carved ice.

"You’re removing a paying customer because of how he looks?" Daniel asked quietly, his tone devoid of anger, yet carrying a heavy, dangerous weight.

Vanessa’s eyes flicked downward beneath the tablecloth, looking directly at Daniel’s scuffed leather work boots and faded jeans with absolute disdain. She scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest.

"You’re disrupting our standards," Vanessa replied snidely, her tone dripping with passive-aggressive hostility. "Our guests pay for an elite atmosphere. Work clothes belong in a diner, Mr. Mercer, not at L’Auberge Dorée."

Daniel didn't argue. He didn't raise his voice, throw a scene, or attempt to defend his attire. Instead, he lifted his gaze slightly, looking directly at the silver name badge pinned over her heart: VANESSA COLE.

He memorized the name in silence.
