Chapter 7 - THE SILENT COMMAND

Monroe moved across the polished floor with smooth, silent purpose. As she approached the head of the briefing table, the elite operators stepped back instinctively, clearing a wide path for the woman in grease-stained coveralls.

She reached the edge of the steel table and stood over the black rifle case. Her right hand hovered for a fraction of a second above the dark foam interior before her fingers closed around the grip with practiced, automatic familiarity.

The sound of her hand settling onto the weapon was a crisp, metallic click that resonated through the silent room. Without lifting the weapon high enough for the room to see its full profile, she performed a rapid, muscle-memory check—thumb flicking the safety selector, fingers checking the chamber clearance, wrist adjusting the balance.

Captain Martinez watched her hands move. The speed and fluidity of her motions were not those of a soldier who had practiced drills for years; they were the instincts of someone who had lived and survived in the dark apex of classified operations.

"Captain Martinez," General Gerald spoke, his voice breaking the stillness without turning his gaze away from Monroe.

"Sir!" Martinez replied, stepping forward immediately.

"Your operational chain of command is altered as of this mark," Gerald declared, his silver hair catching the glow of the digital map. "Monroe has tactical authority on the ground."

Collins’ jaw dropped. "General—with respect—she's a mechanic!"

General Gerald slowly turned his head. His cold grey eyes locked onto Collins with a look that stripped the sergeant of every ounce of his remaining bravado.

"One more word, Sergeant," Gerald said in a low, terrifying whisper, "and you will spend the rest of your natural life sweeping motor-pool bays in Greenland. Stand down."
