Chapter 6 - THE WAITING WEAPON

At the far end of the steel briefing table sat a reinforced, heavy-duty black rifle case fitted with biometric locks, reinforced steel corners, and dual security latches. It had remained undisturbed throughout the entire briefing, looking like a piece of high-tier classified cargo waiting for transit.

The Armory Officer stepped forward instantly, his movements stiff with extreme reverence. He placed his right palm onto the digital scanner on top of the black case.

BEEP.

The dual locks disengaged with a heavy pneumatic hiss. The Armory Officer slowly lifted the black lid just enough for the edge of a specialized matte-black weapon frame to glint beneath the foam casing. The camera angle remained tight, revealing only the edge of the sleek housing and the custom mounting rails, keeping the full silhouette of the legendary rifle hidden in shadows.

Monroe looked across the room at the opened case. Her face showed no surprise, no excitement, and no fear. She looked at the container as if recognizing an old, lethal companion she had put to rest long ago.

Captain Martinez looked from the scarred wrist to the General, his voice caught in his throat. Collins stood completely paralyzed beside his chair.

General Gerald stepped closer to Monroe, looking down at her with a quiet, solemn respect that no officer in the room had ever seen him display.

"It’s been waiting for you," General Gerald said softly.

Monroe slowly raised her hand, her grease-stained fingers extending toward the open black case.
