Chapter 1 - THE MECHANIC'S REQUEST

The fluorescent banks overhead cast a harsh, clinical glow across the modern military briefing room buried deep within the secure perimeter of the base. At the center of the room sat a massive steel briefing table, surrounded by elite operators clad in pristine combat fatigues, body armor, and tactical gear. A wide digital tactical map glowed brightly on the primary wall, projecting satellite grid coordinates, heat signatures, and terrain contours across the faces of the men preparing for an immediate high-stakes infiltration mission.

Standing isolated near the far back wall, away from the cluster of armed soldiers, was Monroe. At thirty-four years old, her blonde hair was pulled back into a slightly messy high ponytail. She wore heavy, grease-stained olive coveralls over a plain gray undershirt, her black work boots scuffed from endless hours on the motor-pool concrete. She wore no insignia, no rank slides, and no visible unit patches or medals. She looked like an ordinary base maintenance mechanic who had wandered into a classified war room by mistake.

Yet her posture betrayed nothing of a subordinate. Her stance was rooted, her breathing rhythmic, and her blue eyes held an intense, unyielding stillness as she watched the tactical display update in real time.

She took a single step forward, her heavy boots making a firm sound against the floor.

"I need a rifle," Monroe said.

Her voice was not loud, but its flat, even tone sliced directly through the low hum of the tactical map and chatter in the room.

Sergeant Collins, a heavily built thirty-six-year-old operator with close-cropped hair and a combat uniform loaded with tactical gear, spun around in his chair. He looked at Monroe’s grease-stained coveralls and broke into a loud, mocking laugh.

Around the central table, several other elite operators chuckled, shaking their heads at the mechanic.

"You?" Collins snorted, leaning back with a grin. "A rifle?"
