Chapter 8 - THE $957 CART
The grocery bill became a family legend almost immediately.
Margaret told relatives Clara abandoned them at a supermarket “over food.”
What she omitted:
Margaret had invited Clara for what she called “a few Christmas things.”
Then Chloe arrived.
The cart expanded.
Wagyu.
Caviar.
Champagne.
A $420 blender.
Copper pans.
Luxury cosmetics sold in the supermarket’s upscale beauty section.
Clara questioned it three times.
Margaret answered:
“We’ll sort it out later.”
At checkout, neither Margaret nor Chloe produced a card.
That was not an accident.
Margaret had done the same thing twice before.
Create social pressure.
Stand near a register.
Let embarrassment force payment.
This time, however, Clara’s phone delivered a larger truth at exactly the right moment.
After Clara walked away, Julian did not pay either.
That detail reached Clara later through the cashier statement Chloe angrily described to an aunt.
Margaret had to remove most of the items.
She purchased approximately $143 of actual groceries on her own card.
The champagne went back.
The Wagyu went back.
The copper cookware went back.
So did the blender.
