Chapter 13 - JULIAN’S CHOICE
Clara gave Julian one final condition.
Not an ultimatum about Margaret.
Not permanent estrangement.
A boundary.
“If we stay married, your family never has access to my financial information again. No documents. No credit. No shared cards. No hidden transfers from joint money. And if your mother asks you to override me, the answer is no before you call me difficult.”
Julian agreed.
For two months, he tried.
Then Margaret’s furnace failed.
Repair estimate:
$7,600.
Margaret called Julian.
She could finance it but disliked the interest rate.
Julian asked Clara whether they could lend her $5,000.
Clara said no.
Not because Margaret deserved to freeze.
Because Margaret had retirement savings sufficient to pay.
She simply did not want to use them.
Julian argued.
Clara repeated no.
Three days later, she discovered he had transferred $5,000 from their joint emergency fund.
Same pattern.
Different amount.
He returned it immediately after Clara confronted him.
That did not matter.
The boundary had been clear.
Julian sat at the kitchen table crying.
“I don’t know how to say no to her.”
Clara believed him.
Then answered:
“I know.”
He looked up.
She had already packed a suitcase.
That was the end.
Not the grocery store.
Not the loan.
