Chapter 11 - THE SECOND APPLICATION
Three weeks after the grocery store, Clara received another notification.
Not a new loan.
A credit-card prequalification inquiry submitted six months earlier.
She requested the archived record.
Applicant:
Clara Whitmore.
Authorized user:
Margaret Whitmore.
The application had failed because identity verification was incomplete.
Clara stared at it.
This time Julian swore he knew nothing.
Clara believed him.
That meant Margaret and Chloe had experimented before the $25,000 loan.
When confronted, Margaret initially denied it.
Then claimed she merely wanted “an emergency family card.”
Using Clara’s credit.
Without Clara.
That was the moment Clara stopped viewing Margaret as overbearing and began viewing her as financially unsafe.
She removed Margaret from every authorized emergency role still connected to her:
medical contact.
Apartment access.
Package pickup.
Shared retail membership.
