Chapter 6 - THE FAMILY MEETING

Margaret demanded a family meeting the following evening.
Clara almost refused.
Then she decided she wanted to hear the explanation once.
All of it.
They met at Margaret’s house.
Not Clara’s.
That mattered.
Clara sat closest to the front door.
Julian beside her.
Margaret opposite.
Chloe arrived twenty minutes late wearing sunglasses despite the cloudy evening.
Nobody apologized.
Margaret began:
“We need to stop treating this like criminal behavior.”
Clara almost smiled.
“What would you call using someone’s Social Security number without permission?”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“It was a family loan.”
“Families still need consent.”
Chloe scoffed.
“You work at a bank. You know we weren’t stealing.”
Clara turned toward her.
“You uploaded my identification.”
Chloe looked away.
“Julian sent it.”
Clara turned.
Julian’s face went pale.
There.
First clean admission.
Margaret immediately interrupted.
“He only sent the file. Chloe handled the application.”
Clara looked at her husband.
“You gave her my license?”
Julian rubbed his forehead.
“I thought it was just for preliminary approval.”
“My Social Security number?”
Silence.
“Julian.”
“Yes.”
Something inside Clara became quiet.
Not calmer.
Finished.
Chloe leaned forward.
“I would have paid every dollar.”
Clara looked at her.
“With what?”
Chloe’s mouth closed.
Clara continued.
“You are borrowing twenty-five thousand because you cannot pay what you already owe.”
Margaret snapped:
“Must you humiliate her?”
Clara stared.
“You tried to put debt in my name without asking, and your concern is Chloe feeling embarrassed?”
Margaret’s jaw tightened.
“You married into this family.”
“No.”
Everyone went quiet.

Clara said:
“I married Julian. I did not become a revolving credit facility for everyone sharing his last name.”
