Chapter 10 - WHAT JULIAN CALLED LOVE
Their marriage counselor asked Julian a simple question.
“Why didn’t you ask Clara about the loan?”
He answered:
“Because she would have said no.”
The room went silent.
Even Julian seemed to hear himself.
The counselor asked:
“So you knew her decision.”
“Yes.”
“And proceeded because you disagreed with it.”
Julian shifted.
“I thought once she understood how serious Chloe’s situation was—”
“That is not consent after the fact.”
Clara looked at him.
That sentence captured five years of marriage.
Julian did not think Clara lacked a voice.
He simply believed he was allowed to override it when her answer threatened family harmony.
He loved her.
Clara believed that.
He also believed her boundaries were negotiable if enough relatives became upset.
Both could be true.
That was why leaving became harder rather than easier.
