Chapter 8 - WHY JESSI PULLED WENDY OUT

Wendy read Frank’s email three times before she spoke.
“He used me.”
Jessi nodded.
“Your son and your brother both did.”
Wendy looked toward the window.
For years she had been the family’s loudest defender. When someone insulted Luca, she fought. When Frank needed help, she argued his case. When Chloe was struggling, she brought groceries and told her to work harder.
Frank knew how to make Wendy move.
Luca knew exactly where her anger would go.
The plan depended on her becoming the emotional witness who pushed Jessi toward a quick divorce.
It failed because Jessi recognized Chloe.
And because Jessi pulled Wendy out of Room 607 before her mother-in-law saw the young woman’s face.
Wendy had been furious about that choice.
Now she understood it.
“If I’d seen Chloe, I would have called Frank from the parking lot.”
“Yes.”
“And he would have known immediately that she’d been exposed.”
“Yes.”
“He would have started telling everyone she was lying.”
Jessi nodded again.
Wendy sat back.
For the first time, she did not ask Jessi what to do next.
She waited.
That was the midpoint reversal: Jessi’s abrupt departure from the motel had not been weakness or shock. Without fully understanding the conspiracy yet, she prevented the family from controlling the first version of the discovery.
Frank expected Wendy to become his messenger.
Instead Wendy became the person who could later testify about how deliberately Luca left the receipt and how quickly Frank tried to manage the fallout.
The deeper reversal came from Chloe.
She admitted she knew Luca planned to leave the receipt.
Not the full financial trap.
But the discovery.
Luca told her Jessi needed to know about the affair because he was tired of living a lie. He asked Chloe to be in Room 607 when Jessi arrived so he could stop hiding and begin a new life honestly.
Chloe believed him.
She also knew it would devastate Jessi.
She stayed anyway.
The betrayal was therefore not merely nine months of secrecy.
Chloe participated in staging Jessi’s humiliation.
Her tears after the motel door closed were real.
So was her decision.
Jessi made that distinction clear when Chloe asked whether they could eventually talk as family again.
“Not now.”
Chloe lowered her head.
“Maybe someday?”
“I don’t know.”
For the first time, Jessi did not soften an answer to protect someone who had hurt her.
Her new objective was no longer to prove Luca cheated or even to stop the loan.
She wanted to establish the complete sequence, preserve her property and expose every person who used her trust as part of a financial rescue plan.
Maya advised her to let the civil and potential criminal investigations proceed separately from the divorce.
Jessi agreed.
Then she did something Wendy never expected.
She asked Wendy to speak with Frank.
Not to confront him.
To listen.
Wendy called her brother and said she wanted to help keep the family from falling apart.

Frank invited her to his office.
He had no idea Jessi already knew the plan.
