Chapter 6 - WHAT WENDY DIDN’T SAY

Wendy learned the financial truth in Maya’s conference room.
She had already spent three days calling Luca a disgrace and threatening to confront Frank herself. Jessi had refused to let her, knowing Wendy’s anger moved faster than evidence.
Now Maya laid out the proposed loan, the disbursement schedule and the marital settlement.
Wendy read each page carefully.
For once she did not interrupt.
When she reached Frank’s $180,000 repayment, she closed her eyes.
“I knew he lent Luca money.”
Jessi looked at her.
“How much did you know?”
“Frank said Luca needed help finishing a project. I thought he used money from selling the old rental.”
“Did you know it was Chloe’s inheritance?”
“No.”
Wendy looked genuinely shaken.
Then she admitted something worse.
Frank had asked her several weeks earlier to convince Jessi to refinance the house. Wendy refused because she believed a married couple should not risk inherited property for a business loan unless both understood the danger.
Frank called her disloyal.
Wendy told Luca she would not interfere.
That explained why Luca stopped discussing the refinance around his mother.
It also explained why he might have expected her to defend Jessi if the affair surfaced.
The consequences began spreading through the family.
Frank discovered Chloe had spoken to Maya and called Wendy demanding she “control the situation.” He claimed Chloe had stolen title-company records and Jessi was using an affair to destroy Luca’s business.
Wendy replied that Frank should worry about his daughter’s missing inheritance.
Frank went silent.
Then he hung up.
Two hours later, Chloe’s employer suspended her pending an internal investigation into unauthorized access and document handling.
Jessi expected to feel satisfaction.
Instead she felt exhausted.
Luca had moved out of the house but began sending long messages about the marriage. He said the motel incident was a terrible mistake, claimed Chloe pursued him and accused Jessi of weaponizing private family matters.
He did not mention the loan.
When Jessi asked directly, he answered:
Frank handled the paperwork. I thought you knew.
It was almost the same sentence Chloe used.
Everyone claimed someone else had explained the part Jessi never heard.
The public consequence arrived when Luca’s business lender filed a lawsuit. Frank’s guarantee became visible in court records, and several family members began calling Wendy for explanations.
Frank told relatives Jessi had promised to support Luca’s company, then withdrew at the last moment after discovering an affair.
That story spread faster than the documents could.
Wendy wanted to answer every call.
Jessi stopped her.
“Let them be wrong for a few days.”
“Why?”
“Because Frank keeps telling different versions to different people. I want all of them in writing.”
The chapter’s escalation came from Chloe.
She forwarded Jessi a message Luca sent the night after Room 607.
Your father knew about us before Jessi did. Ask him why he wanted that receipt found.
Chloe called immediately afterward.
“He says Dad planned it.”
Jessi sat down.

The motel confrontation had exposed the affair.
But it may also have been designed to trigger a family crisis at the exact moment Luca and Frank needed signatures.
