Chapter 11 - BEFORE FEBRUARY

Chloe had told Jessi the affair began in February.
That was true.
What she omitted was that Luca and Frank had already brought her into the company’s financial problems the previous autumn.
Frank asked Chloe to help organize documents because she had recently completed a business-administration certificate. She did not yet work at Commonwealth, but she knew enough to scan invoices, reconcile accounts and assemble lender packages.
At first she believed she was helping recover her father’s investment.
She did not know the money was hers.
Then Luca began spending time with her outside Frank’s office.
Coffee became lunch.
Lunch became late calls.
By February, the affair had begun.
Jessi learned the sequence through preserved messages rather than Chloe’s memory alone.
The first flirtatious exchange appeared months after the initial document work.
That mattered because it separated two kinds of wrongdoing.
Chloe entered the business scheme through loyalty to Frank.
She entered the affair through her own choices.
Later, those wrongs reinforced each other.
When Chloe realized documents were being prepared under Jessi’s name without authorization, Luca used the affair as leverage. He reminded Chloe that Frank would be devastated if he learned she slept with his nephew.
Frank, meanwhile, used Chloe’s missing inheritance as a reason she needed the refinancing to succeed.
Chloe was trapped partly by people who deceived her.
She also helped build the trap.
The confrontation came when Frank’s attorney requested a settlement meeting.
Frank offered to repay Chloe’s inheritance over five years if she withdrew allegations concerning the trust money. He offered Jessi a smaller cash settlement if she agreed not to pursue claims related to the attempted loan application.
Wendy read the proposal and became furious.
Jessi did not.
She asked Maya to calculate whether Frank had the money to perform any of the promises.
He did not.
His business was overleveraged.
The settlement was another delay.
The apparent concession was merely a way to prevent investigators from examining the records while Frank searched for the next source of money.
Then Chloe provided the final email she had withheld.
Luca wrote it after the motel confrontation.
Frank says if Jessi won’t sign, we say you created the title file on your own. He can make this go away if you stay loyal.
Chloe had been frightened enough to save it but ashamed enough to hide it.
That email connected Luca and Frank to a planned scapegoating strategy.
If the financial scheme failed, Chloe would carry the title-company misconduct.
If the divorce settlement succeeded, Jessi would carry the debt.
Frank and Luca intended to keep the money and distribute the blame.
The chapter ended with Commonwealth terminating Chloe for unauthorized access and document manipulation.
She left the office carrying a cardboard box.
Frank did not answer her calls.
Luca sent one message.
I never asked you to ruin your life for me.
Chloe forwarded it to Jessi without comment.
Jessi looked at the message.
May you like
Then she archived it.
She was finished being the person everyone used to explain why their own choices happened.
