Chapter 14 - THE SIGNATURE SHE NEVER GAVE

The financial case concluded before the divorce.
Commonwealth confirmed that Jessi’s electronic signature had been improperly reused and that no valid authorization existed for the proposed home-equity loan. The lender withdrew its claim against her property and pursued Luca and Frank for misrepresentations in their financing submissions.
Frank’s separate reimbursement claim was narrowed to actual documented home improvements, most of which Jessi had already paid for through household accounts.
The inflated charges failed.
Jessi’s house remained hers.
Luca entered a settlement in the civil fraud case and faced further consequences related to false lender statements. Frank’s property business entered liquidation, and his assets became subject to claims from Chloe, Wendy and other creditors.
Chloe’s professional consequences were substantial. She lost her title-services job and accepted responsibility for unauthorized file access and document preparation. Her cooperation reduced some legal exposure but did not restore the career she had damaged.
The divorce hearing centered on marital assets, separate property and Luca’s business debt.
Luca tried one final emotional argument.
He said Jessi had become cold after her mother died. He said she treated inherited property as more important than partnership. He said he made terrible choices because he felt excluded from the life they were supposed to build together.
Jessi listened.
Some of the emotional history contained truth. She had been protective of her mother’s house. She had refused financial risks Luca wanted her to take. She had not always handled disagreement gently.
None of that authorized forged documents.
None of that forced him into Chloe’s bed.
None of that made her responsible for Frank’s missing money.
When the judge asked whether Jessi ever approved the $640,000 loan, Luca finally answered plainly.
“No.”
“Did you know documents were being prepared under her identity?”
“Yes.”
“Did you disclose the financial purpose of the proposed settlement?”
“No.”
Three answers.
No speech about love.
No story about desperation.
Just the facts.
The court confirmed Jessi’s inherited property remained separate and excluded the failed business financing from obligations she had never lawfully assumed.
The marital settlement proceeded without the fraudulent debt.
Afterward, Luca waited outside the courtroom.
“I did love you,” he said.
Jessi believed he might have.
That was the hardest part.
Love did not prevent him from deciding she could absorb the consequences of his failure.
“I know,” she answered.
He looked relieved.
Then she added, “You just loved being rescued more.”
She walked past him.
Wendy was waiting near the elevator.
For once, she did not say Luca was still her son or ask Jessi to forgive anyone.

She simply held out Jessi’s coat.
The woman who had been meant to pressure Jessi into surrendering her house had chosen to stand beside her while she kept it.
