Chapter 13 - WENDY’S MONEY

Wendy had lent Frank $95,000 over six years.

She believed the money supported his property-management business during difficult periods. He repaid some, delayed the rest and repeatedly told her the family would be stronger once Luca’s construction projects succeeded.

She never mentioned the loans to Jessi because they were private sibling matters.

Now she understood why Frank needed everyone else’s money.

He had been filling old holes with new promises.

Maya’s forensic accountant traced the pattern.

Frank invested Chloe’s inheritance in Luca’s business.

When Luca struggled, Frank borrowed from Wendy.

When the private lender demanded repayment, Frank and Luca targeted Jessi’s house.

Each new source of money was supposed to repair the previous misuse before anyone discovered it.

The actual business losses mattered, but concealment made them grow.

Frank was no longer trying to save one investment.

He was trying to prevent the entire chain from becoming visible.

The final piece of the financial mystery appeared in a lender email.

Frank described the pending Jessi refinance as “family-supported liquidity already agreed in principle.”

He attached a property-value estimate and the forged authorization Chloe helped prepare.

Then he wrote:

Once the Marino marital settlement is complete, repayment should be treated as an assumed household obligation.

That sentence exposed the planned transfer of responsibility.

Jessi’s inheritance was supposed to become the final source of repayment for mistakes made by Luca and Frank.

The affair created the crisis.

The divorce settlement created the paperwork.

The house created the money.

Wendy’s temper was supposed to create the pressure.

And Chloe’s title-company position supplied the documents.

The structure was almost complete when Jessi found the receipt.

The central truth had been built from ordinary vulnerabilities rather than one miraculous secret.

Luca feared failure.

Frank feared exposure.

Chloe wanted love and independence from Frank.

Wendy wanted family unity.

Jessi wanted to trust her husband without turning every household decision into an audit.

Each person’s weakness became useful to someone else.

Then Wendy did something she had avoided all her life.

She filed her own claim against Frank.

Not because she expected quick repayment.

Because she refused to keep treating family debt as a secret that could be passed to the next relative.

Chloe also agreed to cooperate fully with investigators and her former employer’s review.

She admitted every unauthorized title-system action.

She provided Luca’s messages.

She acknowledged that she knowingly helped prepare documents after becoming suspicious of Jessi’s lack of consent.

The cooperation would not erase her conduct.

It did establish where responsibility belonged.

The chapter ended with Jessi returning the silver bracelet to Chloe through Maya.

No note.

No accusation.

No promise of reconciliation.

Just the object Chloe wore in Room 607, placed inside a small envelope.

Chloe called afterward.

Jessi did not answer.

Some endings did not require one more conversation.
