Chapter 7 - THE RECORDS

Julian called the next morning.

Rachel sat beside me while I answered.

“Before we discuss anything,” I said, “I don’t want money.”

He was quiet.

“I wasn’t calling to offer it.”

Good.

“I want information.”

“I can give you what I know.”

Julian told me Claire Sterling had been born when his father, Henry, was twenty-two.

Henry’s first wife died young.

He remarried Julian’s mother, Beatrice.

Claire was six.

Beatrice never accepted her fully.

Ruth Bennett worked for the Sterlings and became Claire’s safest adult.

When Claire was twenty-one, she left the Sterling family after a bitter conflict involving her engagement to a man named Matthew Cole.

“Was he my father?”

“I don’t know.”

That surprised me.

“Claire stopped speaking to me too. I was seventeen and stupid enough to think there would always be time.”

Claire disappeared from Long Island.

Years later, Julian learned she had a daughter.

Then Henry died.

Ruth refused to disclose where Claire was living.

“She said Claire wanted no contact.”

“Why?”

“I thought because of the family.”

“Was there money involved?”

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

Julian immediately clarified.

“Not in the way you’re thinking.”

Henry created educational trusts for several grandchildren, including Claire’s future children if legally identified.

But Claire never submitted anything.

Ruth never did either.

The contingent share had eventually remained in the larger family trust under its terms.

There was no fortune waiting with my name already on it.

No hidden mansion.

No magic inheritance.

There was only evidence Claire had existed inside a family that had spent decades pretending she didn’t.

That mattered more.
