Chapter 16 - LILY’S FIFTH BIRTHDAY

Lily’s next birthday had one cake.

Small.

Strawberry.

She chose it herself.

The party was at a public park.

Twelve children.

Paper plates.

Bubble wands.

No investors.

No country club.

No performance.

Richard attended for one hour.

He brought a gift.

Stayed polite.

Left when agreed.

That was progress.

Julian came later.

He sat at a picnic table wearing jeans expensive enough that I still teased him.

Lily climbed beside him.

“Are you really Mommy’s uncle?”

“Yes.”

“Does that make you mine?”

He looked at me.

I shrugged.

“You’re the mathematician.”

Julian smiled at her.

“Great-uncle.”

She frowned.

“That sounds old.”

“It is extremely offensive.”

Lily laughed.

Then she pointed to the orchid necklace.

“Mom says that was Grandma Claire’s.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know her?”

Julian’s face softened.

“I did.”

“What was she like?”

I watched him answer.

“She was brave when she shouldn’t have needed to be.”

That sentence stayed with me.

So many women in my family had been praised for surviving things they should never have been required to survive.

Claire.

Ruth.

Me.

I wanted something different for Lily.

Not resilience first.

Safety first.

May you like

Dignity first.

The right to leave before pain became identity.
