Chapter 14 - JULIAN AND THE STERLINGS
Meeting Julian’s family was awkward.
There was no instant embrace.
No lost princess returning home.
Some relatives were warm.
Some suspicious.
One cousin clearly believed I had appeared because of money.
I let him.
Julian shut down any financial speculation early.
“Maya is Claire’s daughter. That is the relationship. Nothing else is assumed.”
I appreciated that.
Later, a trust attorney reviewed old documents.
There had once been contingent provisions for Claire’s descendants.
They were legally complicated and had long since interacted with amendments, deaths and distributions.
I told the attorney to do his job.
I did not build my future around it.
Eventually, a modest settlement arose from the family trust after all beneficiaries agreed to resolve the historic ambiguity rather than litigate it.
Enough to improve Lily’s education savings.
Not enough to transform our lives.
