Chapter 17 - THE ORCHID

I eventually stopped wearing the ring every day.

Not because it meant less.

Because I no longer needed proof around my neck that I came from somewhere.

The ring went into a small frame with a photograph Julian found of Claire at nineteen.

She was standing barefoot beside a pool.

Laughing.

And wearing the orchid on her finger.

I finally understood why Julian froze in the backyard.

For more than thirty years, Claire existed to him only in memories.

Then suddenly the same piece of silver appeared around the neck of a woman walking away from a man who had just publicly humiliated her.

History had repeated just enough for him to recognize it.

But the ring did not rescue me.

That matters.

I had packed the suitcase before Julian recognized anything.

I had pulled my wrist away before he stepped forward.

I had picked up Lily.

I had decided to leave.

Julian gave me history.

He did not give me courage.

That part was already mine.

Richard’s final words that afternoon were:

“You’ll crawl back by tomorrow.”

I did return to the Long Island house once.

With my attorney.

To collect property.

Not to stay.

Not to apologize.

Not to beg.

And certainly not to crawl.

The last time I walked through that backyard, the pink frosting stain was gone from the patio.

The balloons were gone.

The tables gone.

Everything looked normal.

That is what frightened me most about bad homes.

They can look normal almost immediately after something unforgivable happens inside them.

I touched the orchid ring beneath my blouse.

Then walked out through the gate.

This time, no one tried to stop me.
