Chapter 9 - DAMIAN’S FINAL DEFENSE

Damian’s defense was that grief and panic had made everyone behave irrationally.
He claimed the threat was rhetorical.
He claimed I misunderstood the transfer papers.
He claimed he restrained me only after I became “physically erratic.”
The photographs of my wrist disagreed.
So did the overturned chair.
The scattered papers.
The emergency alert from my phone.
Marcus arriving with officers minutes later.
And Vanessa.
Most of all, Vanessa.
Damian had protected her for years while also controlling her.
Once she realized he was preparing to blame the entire financial scheme on her, loyalty disappeared quickly.
Records showed Damian had approved the largest vendor arrangements.
He had directed accounting staff to bypass ordinary review on several contracts.
He had used Vanessa’s foundation role to move certain expenses while keeping the larger benefits inside companies connected to him.
Vanessa was not innocent.
She had participated.
But she had not designed most of it.
The criminal cases took more than a year.
There were charges related to the assault, coercion, financial crimes, and obstruction attempts.
Not every allegation resulted in conviction.
Some were resolved by plea.
Others through civil recovery.
Damian never returned to Whitmore Restoration.
Vanessa resigned and later entered her own agreement requiring restitution and cooperation.
The board brought in outside leadership.
I did not become CEO.
I had no interest in pretending grief had transformed me into a construction executive.
Instead, I exercised Ethan’s temporary authority only long enough to stabilize governance, authorize the independent investigation, and protect the employees who had nothing to do with the family’s war.
Then I voted to appoint someone qualified.
That decision shocked people.
Especially Damian.
Through attorneys, he accused me of destroying the Whitmore legacy.
I thought about Ethan.
Then Charles.
Then all the tradespeople, project managers, accountants, and crews who had built the company while the Whitmore family put its name on the buildings.
The company was not Damian’s inheritance to loot.
And it was not mine to use as revenge.
It survived.
Smaller for a while.
May you like
Cleaner.
That was enough.
