Chapter 7 - WHAT THE TRANSFER PAPERS WERE REALLY FOR

Damian had not needed my signature to inherit Ethan’s personal property.
He needed it to regain control of the company before the investigation became formal.
The transfer package did several things at once.
It would have appointed Damian as sole acting manager over Ethan’s estate-related business interests.
It would have waived my right to challenge certain preexisting company transactions.
And it would have transferred my temporary voting authority into a family entity controlled by Damian and Vanessa.
The document was written to look administrative.
That was deliberate.
Buried grief makes people easy to rush.
Sign here.
Initial there.
We’ll explain later.
Damian expected me to obey because I had spent nine years avoiding business politics.
He mistook disinterest for ignorance.
I did not understand Whitmore Restoration.
But I understood the sentence sign it or die here.
That erased any ambiguity.
The forced-signature attempt also damaged Damian in a way he had not anticipated.
Until that afternoon, the internal financial evidence required careful interpretation.
Afterward, investigators had motive.
Why would a senior executive physically coerce his brother’s widow into transferring control hours after the funeral?
Why would he be terrified of sealed evidence?
Why would his sister panic about a hidden panel?
Suddenly, every complicated spreadsheet had human behavior attached to it.
Vanessa hired separate counsel within twenty-four hours.
That mattered.
Damian had always assumed she would follow him.
But Vanessa was frightened of prison in a way Damian seemed constitutionally incapable of being frightened of consequences until they were already standing in the room.
She began cooperating.
Not nobly.
Strategically.
She admitted Damian had discovered Ethan was preserving copies of company records.
She admitted they searched Ethan’s office while I was arranging funeral flowers.
She admitted Damian believed there was one hidden archive somewhere in the house.
They found references to “BP” in Ethan’s notes.
Damian guessed basement panel.
He searched the basement and found nothing.
Vanessa assumed that meant the hidden material had been destroyed.
She was wrong.
BP meant blue panel.
May you like
But there were several blue panels.
Ethan had counted on exactly that.
