Chapter 4 - WHY I BECAME CALM

People later asked how I became so calm while Damian was threatening me.
I wasn’t calm.
I was terrified.
But twenty minutes earlier, while Vanessa was upstairs changing out of her funeral clothes and Damian was taking a call in Ethan’s study, I had gone into the powder room and texted Marcus.
They’re pushing papers again. Something feels wrong.
His response came immediately.
Do not sign. I’m ten minutes away. If you feel unsafe, call 911.
I started typing.
Then the powder-room handle moved.
Damian.
“Rachel?”
I shoved the phone into my dress pocket.
“I’m coming.”
When I stepped out, he was watching me.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Understandable.”
He smiled.
That smile frightened me more than anger would have.
At the dining table, he placed the papers in front of me.
“Sign.”
“I’m waiting for my attorney.”
“No.”
“Damian.”
“Rachel, you don’t understand how vulnerable everything is right now.”
“Then explain it tomorrow.”
Vanessa moved behind me.
“You’re making this harder.”
“I’m not signing.”
Damian leaned forward.
“You have no idea what Ethan left behind.”
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
He realized he had said too much.
Then his hand closed around my arm.
Hard.
I screamed.
He dragged me away from the table.
The chair went over.
That was how I ended up on the floor.
My phone stayed in my pocket.
During the struggle, I pressed the side button repeatedly.
I had set up the emergency feature months earlier after a neighborhood burglary.
It sent my location and an SOS alert to my selected contacts.
Ethan had once been the first contact.
After his death, my sister Laura became first.
Marcus had been temporarily added that afternoon because he was coming to the house.
I did not know whether the alert had worked.
I did not know if my phone was damaged.
I only knew Marcus had already been close.
So when Damian forced the pen into my hand, I understood something he did not.
Every second he spent trying to make me sign increased the chance someone else reached the house.
That was why I stopped fighting.
Not because I surrendered.
Because resistance had changed shape.
“You already lost.”
May you like
Damian thought I meant the papers.
I meant time.
