Chapter 1 - THE PEN ON THE FLOOR

Three hours after my husband’s funeral, his brother pinned me to the hardwood floor of our living room and forced a pen into my hand.

“Sign it or die here.”

Damian’s knee pressed against my hip while his fingers crushed my wrist.

My black funeral dress had twisted around my legs. One shoe had come off near the staircase. Papers were scattered across the floor beside me, their pages bent where Damian had dragged them from the dining table.

Vanessa kicked the stack closer.

My husband’s sister crouched beside us and flattened the signature page.

“Finish it.”

I stared at the line.

My name was supposed to go there.

Rachel Whitmore.

One signature, and according to Damian, everything would become simpler.

The house.

The family company.

The investment accounts.

The estate administration.

All transferred into a structure he and Vanessa controlled.

At least, that was what they wanted me to believe.

Damian squeezed harder.

“Do it.”

I winced.

Then something inside me went completely quiet.

Maybe I had simply reached the limit of fear.

Maybe grief had already emptied out the part of me they thought they could still threaten.

Or maybe I had just remembered what I had done twenty minutes earlier.

I stopped struggling.

Damian noticed.

So did Vanessa.

I let the pen fall from my fingers.

Then I looked directly at him.

“You already lost.”

His expression shifted.

Only slightly.

“What?”

Vanessa’s confidence cracked first.

“Damian.”

He grabbed for the pen.

I slapped it with my free hand.

It skittered across the hardwood and disappeared beneath the coffee table.

Damian lunged for it.

That was when the front door exploded inward.

“Get away from her!”

Three people rushed inside.

Two moved immediately toward Damian and Vanessa.

The third was the investigator I had met only once before my husband died.

Marcus Reed.

One official pulled me away from Damian and shielded me near the staircase.

Another blocked him from crossing the room.

Marcus held up a sealed evidence bag.

Damian saw it.

And went pale.

Vanessa backed into the dining table, sending more papers sliding to the floor.

She stared at the bag.

Then panic overran judgment.

“You said nobody found the blue panel!”

Silence.

Damian turned toward her so fast it looked painful.

“Vanessa.”

My heart stopped.

Blue panel?

Marcus looked sharply at her.

So did I.

Damian’s mouth tightened.

He had been terrified of the evidence bag.

But Vanessa had just revealed there was something else they believed nobody knew existed.

May you like

Something hidden in my own house.

And suddenly I understood why they had not even waited until my husband was buried before trying to make me sign.
