Chapter 6 - WHAT ETHAN HID

The blue panel was beneath the staircase.

Vanessa identified it without realizing she had.

When investigators began checking the basement and garage, she kept watching the hallway.

Marcus noticed.

So did I.

The small panel blended into the dark blue wall beneath the stairs.

Ethan had painted it himself two summers earlier.

I remembered teasing him.

“You own a restoration company and this is the best you can do?”

He laughed.

“You noticed it, so apparently not.”

Behind the panel was not money.

No jewelry.

No secret weapon.

It was a weatherproof document case and two encrypted storage drives.

Ethan had created duplicates of his internal investigation.

Vendor contracts.

Approval chains.

Private email exports.

Audio notes.

Photographs of invoices.

And a handwritten index explaining what he believed had happened.

For nearly four years, companies connected indirectly to Damian and Vanessa had been receiving inflated contracts from Whitmore Restoration.

Not every contract was fraudulent.

That was what made the scheme difficult to see.

Some vendors did real work.

Others subcontracted nearly everything and kept enormous margins.

Payments moved through consulting companies with different names.

Family-foundation funds had also been used for expenses that had nothing to do with charity.

Ethan discovered the pattern slowly.

He confronted Damian once.

Damian denied everything.

Afterward, records began disappearing.

That was why Ethan hired Marcus.

The evidence bag Marcus carried into the living room contained a separate drive Ethan had left with his attorney.

It was enough to show irregularities.

The blue-panel archive was far more complete.

Most damaging was Ethan’s audio log.

Not a secret recording of Damian.

Ethan speaking to himself.

Dates.

Names.

Questions.

Plans for further review.

And one sentence about me.

Rachel knows none of this. Keep her out until I can prove it. Damian will assume she’s easier to pressure than I am.

I listened to that line three days later.

Then stopped the recording.

Ethan had been trying to protect me.

I was angry with him for it.

Love does not always improve when people hide danger from you.

Sometimes protection becomes another form of control, even when the intention is kind.

If Ethan had told me, maybe I would have been prepared.

Maybe Damian would not have found me alone after the funeral.

May you like

But anger at a dead man has nowhere useful to go.

So I focused on the living.
