Chapter 2 - Willow House

We did not finish lunch.

Daniel paid without looking at the check.

Outside, Lily climbed into my car and locked the door herself.

That image hurt worse than the slap I had given Daniel.

He stood beside the curb.

“What stairs?”

“Not now.”

“You just told me my daughter has been visiting a woman I haven’t spoken to in nineteen years.”

“I told you she was visiting your mother.”

“That is somehow worse.”

I looked through the windshield.

Lily sat in the backseat watching us.

“Lower your voice.”

“You brought my child to Helen.”

“Our child.”

“Without telling me.”

“Yes.”

He stared.

I did not improve the answer.

“How many times?”

“Four.”

His face tightened.

“Four.”

“Yes.”

“And you made Lily hide it.”

“I told her not to bring it up with you.”

“That is hiding it.”

“Yes.”

The admission landed badly.

It should have.

Daniel paced away, then turned back.

“Why Willow House?”

“Because Helen moved there last year.”

“Moved from where?”

“Daniel.”

“Where?”

“Baltimore.”

He laughed once.

“My mother has lived two hours away for a year.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew.”

“For seven months.”

He stared at me.

I could see him calculating holidays, birthdays, weekends.

Every time I said Lily had a piano lesson moved.

Every Saturday afternoon I said my sister needed help.

Every question he had decided not to push because I told him he was becoming controlling.

I had used his effort against him.

That part belonged to me.

“Who was the man?”

I looked away.

Daniel noticed.

“Claire.”

“Not here.”

His voice changed.

“You recognize him.”

“Yes.”

“Does Lily?”

I hesitated.

That was worse than answering.

“How does my daughter recognize a man connected to Willow House?”

“She saw him once.”

“When?”

“Last visit.”

“You told me she was with Hannah last Saturday.”

“She was afterward.”

Daniel looked toward the car.

Lily watched us.

He lowered his voice.

“Did he touch her?”

“No.”

“Talk to her?”

“Barely.”

“Then why was he hiding?”

“He wasn’t hiding from Lily.”

“Who, then?”

I didn’t answer.

Daniel understood.

“Me.”

I said nothing.

His eyes changed.

“Who is he?”

A horn sounded behind us.

We had been standing in a restaurant pickup lane too long.

I opened my car door.

Daniel grabbed the top edge before I could close it.

I stared at his hand.

He released it.

Small correction.

Late.

“I need to know who she’s been around.”

“You do.”

“Then tell me.”

“I will.”

“When?”

“When Lily isn’t sitting five feet away wondering which parent she’s supposed to protect.”

That hit.

Daniel looked toward the backseat.

His anger shifted.

He bent slightly so Lily could see him.

“Hey.”

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry about the fries.”

Nothing.

“And the table.”

She wiped her nose.

“You scared me.”

His face tightened.

“I know.”

She looked at me.

Then back at him.

“Are you mad at Grandma?”

Daniel didn't answer.

She continued.

“She said you were.”

“Lily,” I said softly.

“No.”

Daniel stopped me.

He looked at her.

“Did Grandma tell you why?”

Lily nodded.

“What did she say?”

I started to intervene.

Lily answered first.

“She said you think Uncle Miles hurt her.”

Daniel’s entire body went rigid.

The name finally sat between us.

Miles.

Daniel’s older brother.

The man who had just stood behind him in the restaurant.

The brother Daniel had not seen since he was nineteen.

Daniel slowly looked at me.

“You brought Lily into a house with Miles Carter?”

“He wasn’t supposed to be there.”

He stared.

I hated the sentence the moment I heard it.

Not because it was false.

Because it sounded exactly like the kind of defense our daughter should never have been forced to understand.

Daniel stepped back.

“When do I get the whole truth?”

I looked at Lily.

“After she goes to Hannah’s.”

Daniel nodded.

Then he said:

“And this time, Claire, I’m asking you.”

Not Lily.

Me.

I nodded.

“Okay.”

Lily spoke from the backseat.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

She had stopped crying.

That somehow made the next sentence worse.

May you like

“Grandma said Uncle Miles didn’t push her down the stairs.”

Daniel shut his eyes.
