Chapter 1 - The Man Behind Daniel’s Chair

I saw the fries hit the floor before Daniel saw me.

The basket left the table with one hard sweep of his hand.

Lily flinched so badly her chair scraped backward.

“Where did Mom take you?”

Daniel leaned across the table.

Our daughter looked toward the restaurant entrance.

Toward me.

I was still twenty feet away.

“Lily.”

She lowered her eyes.

Daniel slammed his palm down.

Silverware jumped.

“Tell me.”

People at the next table turned.

Lily started crying.

I stopped caring who was watching.

I crossed the restaurant.

“Mom said you’d get mad.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Then he saw me.

I reached the table and slapped him.

Hard.

“Claire—”

I pulled Lily against me.

“You promised not to ask.”

Daniel touched his cheek.

“Ask what?”

I froze.

He saw it.

That was the problem with lies inside a marriage. Sometimes one wrong sentence opened a door you had spent months holding shut.

Daniel stood.

“Claire.”

“We’re leaving.”

“Where have you been taking her?”

“Not here.”

“That’s what you keep saying.”

I reached for Lily’s coat.

Lily caught my wrist.

“Mom.”

“Come on.”

“But I saw him too.”

I went cold.

Daniel heard it.

“Saw who?”

Lily looked at me.

I didn’t answer fast enough.

A chair moved behind Daniel.

Slowly.

A man’s hand appeared over the wooden backrest at the empty table behind him.

Dark suit sleeve.

Wedding band.

Only part of his body entered my view.

I knew that hand.

Daniel turned.

The man stayed behind him.

His face remained outside my sightline.

“She wasn’t supposed to see me.”

Daniel stopped moving.

So did I.

Lily stared directly at him.

Daniel looked at me.

“Who is that?”

The man’s fingers tightened around the chair.

I wanted him to leave.

He knew it.

“Claire,” Daniel said again.

The man spoke before I could.

“Ask her where Willow House is.”

Daniel’s face emptied.

For several seconds he simply stared at me.

Then he looked toward the man.

“No.”

The man said nothing.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“No, you don’t get to walk into a restaurant and say that name.”

I pulled Lily closer.

“Daniel, please.”

He looked at our daughter.

Then at me.

“You took her there?”

I didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Daniel pushed his chair away.

“Who did she see?”

Lily started crying harder.

I moved between them.

“You’re done asking her questions.”

Daniel’s eyes were on the man now.

“You knew about this?”

The man answered quietly.

“I knew enough.”

Daniel took one step toward him.

I caught Daniel’s sleeve.

“Don’t.”

He turned on me.

“Why?”

Because I had made a promise.

Because I had already broken several.

Because Lily had seen someone she was never supposed to meet.

I looked toward the man.

He finally moved away from the chair.

Still no face.

Just the shoulder of his suit disappearing past Daniel.

Before he left, he said:

“Tell him yourself this time.”

Daniel stared after him.

Then back at me.

His voice was quieter now.

“Who lives at Willow House?”

I could feel Lily shaking against my side.

I answered the only part I was ready to say.

“Your mother.”

Daniel sat down without meaning to.

Lily whispered:

“Dad?”

He looked at her.

She wiped her face.

Then said something I had spent six months praying she would never have to say in front of him.

May you like

“Grandma Helen says you won’t come because of the stairs.”

Daniel stopped breathing.
