Chapter 9 - THE HEALED FOYER

An hour later, the grand marble foyer had returned to its natural, historic stillness, the bright afternoon light fading into the warm, amber hues of early evening.

The worn suitcase and packed cardboard boxes had disappeared, returned to the private servants’ wing where Maria Santos and Lucy had spent the last two years. The double-height arched transom windows now cast long, gentle shadows across the Calacatta marble, the sprawling space peaceful and secure once more.

Nicholas Caruso stood by the tall, arched double doors leading to the private library, his hands tucked loosely into his trousers, his black suit jacket open, his dark wavy hair catching the fading sunlight. On his wrist, his luxury watch ticked silently, a mechanical heartbeat in a home that had finally been purged of its deceit.

Arthur stood near the console table, his formal, loyal posture relaxed, having just returned from overseeing the departure of Vivienne’s personal assistants.

“All of Ms. Hart’s belongings have been packed and loaded into the transport, Mr. Caruso,” Arthur said quietly, his voice carrying the deep, unshakeable respect of a man who had watched his boss defend the integrity of their home.

“Thank you, Arthur,” Nicholas replied, his deep baritone carrying the quiet exhaustion of a long day, but entirely free of the anger that had dominated the afternoon.

From the adjoining corridor, the sound of light, hesitant footsteps echoed into the foyer.

Lucy appeared, her pretty yellow dress slightly rumpled, her long brown curls newly brushed. She was holding a fresh, unsmudged chocolate chip cookie in her small hand, her single pink sock still slightly bunched around her ankle, but her face was entirely free of the fear that had choked her hours earlier.

She walked straight to Nicholas, her small bare feet padding softly on the marble, and looked up with wide, trusting hazel eyes.

“Can we stay forever, Uncle Nicholas?” she asked.

May you like

Nicholas Caruso smiled—a rare, gentle expression that softened the rugged lines of his handsome face—and reached down to gently squeeze her small shoulder.

“Yes, Lucy,” Nicholas promised softly, his voice rich with an unshakeable, protective warmth. “You and your Mommy can stay as long as you want.”
