Chapter 3 - THE HALF-EATEN TREAT

Nicholas’s dark eyes never left Lucy’s face. He could feel the tiny girl’s heart racing through her yellow dress, her small fingers still clutching his dark lapel.

“What happened, Lucy?” Nicholas asked, his voice low and soothing. “Tell Uncle Nicholas exactly what happened.”

Lucy’s gaze dropped. Her long brown curls fell forward, obscuring her face for a second before she slowly lifted her right hand.

Nicholas looked down at her small fingers. The tip of her index finger and her thumb were smudged with dark, sticky chocolate.

“I only ate one cookie,” she whispered, her voice carrying the innocent, heartbreaking guilt of a child who believed her tiny transgression had caused a catastrophe.

On the marble floor beside her worn suitcase, a crumpled piece of napkin held the crushed, half-eaten remains of a chocolate chip cookie—a small treat she had clearly tried to conceal.

Lucy’s hazel eyes rose back to Nicholas, filled with a desperate, pleading sincerity.

“I saved half for Mommy,” she quietly added.

A profound, suffocating weight settled over Nicholas’s broad shoulders. The simplicity of the child’s logic was devastating: she believed they were being banished, thrown out into the cold New York streets, because she had taken a single cookie from the kitchen.

Across the foyer, Maria Santos lowered her eyes sadly, her hand covering her mouth as she tried to stifle another sob, her shoulders hunched in the wrinkled black-and-white uniform.

Nicholas felt a dangerous, cold anger ignite behind his ribs. He understood the petty tyranny of the Upper East Side, where staff were treated as interchangeable parts, but Maria had served his family with unswerving loyalty for two years. To threaten a mother and a child over a stolen biscuit was not merely a misunderstanding—it was an act of heartless cruelty.

He slowly rose to his feet, keeping his hand resting gently on Lucy’s shoulder, a protective wall of iron between the child and the rest of the world.
