Chapter 5 - THE TENSE MISUNDERSTANDING

The silence in the grand foyer was suffocating.

Nicholas took a single, deliberate step forward, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply on the marble, keeping Lucy tucked protectively beside him. He did not raise his voice, but the sheer, commanding force of his presence seemed to compress the sprawling space, focusing the entire room’s tension on the woman at the base of the staircase.

“Who told you to return it?” Nicholas asked, his voice low, steady, and laden with the quiet fury of a protector whose sanctuary has been violated.

Lucy’s eyes darted toward Vivienne, her tiny fingers clutching Nicholas’s hand as she silently confirmed what everyone in the room already knew.

Vivienne Hart stepped away from the balustrade, her expensive ivory gown rustling softly against the marble stairs. She offered a quick, practiced smile—the kind used to defuse uncomfortable situations in high-society drawing rooms—though her eyes remained guarded and alert.

“It’s just a misunderstanding, Nicholas,” Vivienne said, her voice smooth, elegant, and entirely controlled. “The household needed some adjustments, and I felt it was best to handle the staff’s transition before the engagement gala. Maria was offered a generous severance.”

Misunderstanding. The word tasted like ash in Nicholas’s mouth.

He looked at the worn suitcase on the floor, at the cardboard boxes, at the little girl with chocolate on her fingers who had been crying because she thought a cookie had cost them their home. There was no misunderstanding here. There was only the cold, unilateral exercise of power by a woman who had not yet married into the Caruso name, but was already trying to purge its loyalties.

“You’re dismissing my staff without my knowledge, Vivienne?” Nicholas asked, his baritone voice dropping into a quiet, terrifying cadence that made Arthur, the longtime butler standing near the dining room archway, shift his weight in visible concern.

The entire foyer seemed to go dead, waiting for the storm to break.
