Chapter 7 - SHATTERED ILLUSIONS

The grand marble foyer had become a battlefield of silent intentions.
Nicholas stood like a statue in his dark suit, his fingers slowly unfolding the heavy, legal-grade paper Arthur had delivered. The rustle of the parchment was the only sound in the cavernous space, a sharp, paper click that seemed to carry the weight of an impending indictment.
Beside him, Lucy was still, her emotional hazel eyes watching him as if he were reading a magical book that would decide their fate, her single pink sock still bunched around her tiny ankle.
Nicholas’s gaze scanned the typed lines on the page—a formal cease-and-desist and financial audit from a prominent Manhattan legal firm, addressed not to Caruso Enterprises, but to Vivienne Hart’s family trust. Specifically, it outlined a series of unauthorized transfers, heavily leveraging the Caruso name as collateral for a failing gallery venture Vivienne had secretly tried to bail out weeks before the engagement.
His jaw locked, a muscle twitching beneath his stubble.
Vivienne’s attempt to dismiss Maria and Lucy was not an "adjustment" for the gala; it was a desperate, calculated scramble to remove the one staff member who had access to the private study where the couriers and financial logs were handled.
He looked up from the document, his eyes dark as anthracite as they locked onto his fiancée.
Vivienne took a slow step backward, her elegant hand rising to touch the diamond necklace at her throat, the defensiveness in her posture now bordering on outright panic as her confident facade completely shattered in the bright afternoon light.

“It was a private family matter, Nicholas,” Vivienne whispered, her voice losing its smooth, aristocratic control, her fingers trembling against her ivory gown. “It has nothing to do with Caruso’s assets.”
“It has everything to do with Caruso’s trust,” Nicholas said, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that filled the foyer with an icy, absolute finality.
