Chapter 10 - THE GUARDIAN OF THE HOUSE

The evening sun was dipping below the skyline, casting a rich, golden-amber glow through the grand arched windows, painting the marble foyer in warm, tranquil hues.
Maria Santos emerged from the side wing, her wrinkled black-and-white uniform smoothed, her hair tied back in its customary, neat knot. Her face, though tired, carried a profound, luminous relief as she watched her daughter sitting happily on the bottom step of the grand curved staircase, quietly eating her cookie under Arthur's watchful, grandfatherly gaze.
She walked toward Nicholas, her steps hesitant but filled with an overwhelming, silent gratitude.
“Mr. Caruso,” Maria said quietly, her voice steady now, but filled with emotion. “I don't know how to repay your trust. After everything… you protected us.”
Nicholas turned his dark, intense eyes to her, his posture relaxed, his hand resting casually on the brass balustrade.
“You’ve kept this house running, Maria,” Nicholas Caruso said, his voice a low, resonant baritone that carried the absolute finality of a sovereign don. “And in this house, we protect our own. You never have to justify yourself to anyone else under my roof.”
He looked back toward the staircase, where Lucy was happily swinging her legs, her pink sock still bunching around her ankle, her tiny, chocolate-smudged fingers waving to him with a bright, joyful exuberance.

Nicholas Caruso’s New York empire was built on iron, blood, and the merciless acquisition of power, but as he watched the little girl laugh in the golden light of his foyer, he knew his greatest triumph was not the millions in the bank or the estates on the shore. It was the unshakeable, sacred peace of the family he had fought to keep safe.
He walked slowly toward the library, his boots clicking softly on the marble, his heart at ease as the double doors closed behind him, leaving his home guarded, whole, and finally at peace.
