Chapter 9 - The Trial of Desperation

Summer brought new warmth, but also one final, desperate legal attack from Lucas Ward.
Realizing that his financial assets were bound tightly within Sophie’s trust, Lucas filed a suit in county family court seeking full parental custody of Sophie, claiming that I was emotionally unstable and that Ethan had coerced him into signing over his equity.
On a hot July morning, we gathered in the county family court.
Lucas sat at the petitioner's table beside a high-priced attorney his mother had funded, looking pale and desperate.
I sat at the respondent's table with Ethan and our lead family attorney, Sarah Jenkins.
"Your Honor," Lucas’s attorney argued, standing before Judge Harris. "My client made a mistake during a stressful period when his child was born prematurely. However, Miss Vance and Mr. Cole conspired to use corporate blackmail to strip him of his life savings and separate him from his daughter. We request immediate custody restoration."
Judge Harris looked over his glasses at Lucas, then at the thick stack of evidence Sarah Jenkins laid on his desk.
"Mr. Ward," Judge Harris said, his voice dry and stern. "I have reviewed the hospital records from the NICU. You visited your child once for fourteen minutes in six weeks. I have bank records showing you paid zero dollars in child support while spending thousands on luxury vehicles. And I have sworn statements from HR officers showing you manually blocked the mother's employment applications while she was facing eviction."
Lucas swallowed hard, looking at his shoes.
"Furthermore," Judge Harris continued, "the equity transfer was reviewed and validated by an independent financial auditor and signed in the presence of legal counsel. Your petition for custody is denied with prejudice."
Judge Harris slammed his gavel down.
"Not only is your petition denied, Mr. Ward," Judge Harris added sharply, "but I am ordering a permanent protection order. You are legally barred from contacting Elena Vance or Sophie Vance. If you violate this order, you will face immediate felony imprisonment."

Lucas collapsed back into his seat, his head in his hands, completely defeated.
I looked over at Ethan, who squeezed my hand tightly under the table. The long, terrifying shadow of Lucas Ward was officially gone forever.
